With Dental Reform and SDR 161, NHS Scotland introduced a simplified list of treatment codes for use on NHS claims. This includes a more concise list of codes when claiming for fillings.

The NHS codes used where fillings have been provided after SDR161 consist of a single treatment code based on the number of surfaces appropriate for the filling:

C001: 1 single surface filling
C002: 2 surface fillings on a single tooth
C003: 3 or more surface fillings on a single tooth

Because there is also a requirement to indicate the filling material used, in Dentally, we have provided a version of each of the above codes for each admissible filling material, as listed below.

NEW NHS Filling codes from Nov 2023

C001A - Filling (single surface) Amalgam

C001R - Filling (single surface) Composite Resin

C001GI - Filling (single surface) Glass Ionomer

C002A - Filling (2 surface) Amalgam

C002R - Filling (2 surface) Composite Resin

C002GI - Filling (2 surface) Glass Ionomer

C003A - Filling (3 or more surfaces) Amalgam

C003R - Filling (3 or more surfaces) Composite Resin

C003GI - Filling (3 or more surfaces) Glass Ionomer

Multiple Fillings in One Tooth

Where there is more than one filling of a code in the same tooth, SDR 161 states that an alternative code is required.

C012: 2 single surface fillings on one tooth (any material)
C013: 2 x 2 surface fillings on one tooth (any material)

These codes only apply in the combinations above, where there are multiples of the same filling code in each tooth.

In Dentally, we will automatically apply the correct multi-filling code per tooth, based on the fillings charted.

Where 2 single or 2 surface fillings are charted on the same tooth, the correct 'multiple fillings per tooth' code is charted and charged.
